Hi everyone,

Exciting times at Brighton Energy Co-op! After raising start-up cash through January, we are now in discussion with six different sites for our panels – including a couple of schools, a hospital, a new sports facility as well as several others. We will soon contract lawyers for the detailed negotiations – this will then put us in a position to launch our share offer. We hope to be installing by the summer.

Speaking of which, we are currently doing a spot of market research and I hope you can help. When we do the share launch we need to be canny about our communications. Consequently we’ve complied this online questionaire to try to understand how best to communicate our message. If you could spend 5 minutes letting us know your thoughts it’d be much appreciated.

Meanwhile, as many of you may be aware, the government recently announced it would review the Feed in Tariff scheme. The proposal is to have a look at what constitutes a ‘large-scale’ PV installation. At present any solar system under 5MW is eligible for FITs; the announcement hinted that this might be brought down to 50kw systems (what happens to systems between 50kw and 5MW is unclear).

While this is a unnecessary undermining of the policy environment (and I urge you to add your name to a petition here), fortunately our plan is to put solar on six or seven small sites, most of which are not much above 50kw anyway. As such the BEC plan is not dramatically affected by the potential FIT review. Phew!

Finally, we also have a major development that I can’t quite tell you about at the moment – but I hope to let it out of the bag next week!

All the best

Will
